Mission
Worked in a team of 4, we developed an mobile app that will serve as the interface for connecting the mobile phone camera with the printer hardware, allowing users to take photos or video bursts or to select content from their phone gallery and initiate a 3D, motion, or still instant print of the chosen content.

User Interviews
8 interviews conducted with fotostax target audience - party goers & photography lovers aged from 25-28.
Key Takeaway 1
fotostax is an innovative and interesting product to replace instax camera
-
Based on the interviews we had with the users, users all think the portable 3D printer is an interesting new concept, and that it can make a difference in the current Instant camera market.
-
Storytelling is the main purpose of how users will use the product. They would prefer to use the camera at special occasions, for instance, friends gathering to capture relevant moments with a physical memory.
-
They would like to have an app that can automatically connect with the printer once opened, with an easy one click function in the app
to take the photo.
“There is definitely a gap in the market, especially for influencers.”
Natasha, 28
“Plugging the phone into the device is better than fujifilm. I will use it to replace my fujifilm instax camera.”
Brian, 25
Key Takeaway 2
Users prefer a simple-to-use photo taking & editing app
-
From the interviews, there are two different opinions from the interviewees on photo editing app usage. Half said they do not like to spend time editing photos, and prefer to have photos in natural effects, while half generally spend at least 20 minutes to edit the photo to high quality. Yet, all claim to want a user friendly app that can achieve their desired outcome easily.
-
Adding filters is the key function to users on the app, especially having an instant improvement of the picture in just one click before it is printed. One off purchase to filters is more appealing to users instead of monthly subscription.
-
They do not want to have too many editing features in the app that will make the whole taking & printing process way too complex.
“Photo edit apps nowadays have too many features and that makes me even less motivated to edit any photos.”
Chris, 27
“I’m frustrated sometimes to switch through too many apps to get the desired effect I want.”
Brian, 26
Key Takeaway 3
Printed photo quality is utterly important to users
-
Photo quality is important to the users, they want to be able to edit and preview the photo taken from the camera and ensure the physical photo printed out is at best quality to save photo paper cost.
-
Another point to note is that they suggest to have some guides or tutorial on the app to shorten their learning curve of the printer, for example on how to take the best angle photo or what motion looks best in the final output.
-
Users also would like to share the photo to social media either with a physical photo on hand or a digital version that can showcase the motion and effects.
“If the app can tell me how to make the movement it will save my time.”
Jason, 26
“Photo paper cost is my first considerable factor to decide whether I will print the photo out or not. ”
Ashley, 25
Competitor Analysis

Research conclusion
1. Competitors do not have a strong promotional message and branding for their photo printing product.
2. The product is brand new to the market which needs a strong branding message and social media presence to capture customers’ interest.
3. Users prefer a easy to use mobile app that focus on the capturing, simple editing and printing photo.

We put our personas into action and went through fotostax current website and other digital presence to evaluate pain points and opportunities. We created this map to showcase Carls’s emotions, thoughts and actions from the discovery of fotostax to her usage experience.

Problem Statement
We need to create a way to connect users with an app to take and print photos and engage them constantly on the long term.
We believe that by creating an easy-to-use and personalised app for creative makers. We will achieve a high usability of the printer and a high awareness of the brand online & offline, as well as creating a group of loyal customers.
We will know when it’s true when we see people engaging with the brand by a high amount of UGC content, a high download rate of the app and increased revenue of the business.
